What To Expect For Engagement & Wedding Photos

As professional wedding photographers in Waterford, Michigan, we have some excellent advice on what to wear for your engagement photos, as well as timing and what to expect with your wedding photography. Read on about our process and ideas to capture the best possible engagement images and perfect wedding photos!

We begin planning your engagement session by offering potential dates, locations, and outfit ideas. Then we discuss your wedding day, learning all about the special details you have put into planning your perfect wedding. In our wedding photography consultations, we are frequently asked what to wear to ensure the best possible engagement photos. Let’s start with engagement session tips and tricks.

Focus on only one of you wearing a pattern at a time. If you wear a floral dress, your fiancée should wear a solid shirt. If your partner wears a checkered shirt, you should wear a solid dress. Photographs come out beautifully if you both wear a solid color as well. Aim for pastel and light colors. Light blues, yellows, pinks, and whites photograph better than dark colors.

If you are able, wear heels! You are welcome to have one or two outfits per session. We suggest one casual and one dressy outfit for each of you. Make sure your ring has been cleaned and your nails have been done. Apply makeup for your session, adding a bit more than usual to ensure you don’t look washed out in your images.

Once we are given your wedding day details, we will create a photography timeline for you to review and approve. You’ll want to be sure to discuss your must-have photos with your photographer in advance, to be certain you get the pictures you most want. Although we will be taking plenty of photographs throughout the day, anything you particularly want photographed should be communicated.

For the timeline, we will discuss when we’ll arrive, leaving sufficient time to get you into your dress for photographs with you and your bridesmaids, flower girls, etc. We’ll also discuss when we will be taking photographs with the groom, his groomsmen and the ring bearer. You may want shots of the venue with guests and/or groom and groomsmen waiting inside.

After these scheduled photo sessions on your wedding day, we will have your bridal party retreat to relax for half an hour before the wedding ceremony. Photographs taken during your wedding ceremony typically include the bridal party entrance, the bride walking down the aisle and the groom’s reaction. We include the father or mother giving the bride away, the exchange of vows and rings, first kiss, etc.

Afterwards, we will take formal photographs with the immediate family. Once the family photo session is complete, we will move on to take bridal party photographs, and then photographs of just the bride and groom. You will then have time to relax before your grand entrance, dinner, toast, cake cutting and dancing.
